Agriculture drones are now flying across South Texas farmlands, according to KRISTV.com of Corpus Christi, Texas. Both Bachelor and Master degree students are guiding and directing a range of specialist drones over key crops within Texas. Research centers like the Texas A&M Agrilife Research and Extension Center are pouring resources into these agriculture drones, sometimes called unmanned aircraft systems or UAS, and a new study suggests that drones will change the way agriculture operates in the near future. Texas A&M Corpus Christi has been rated in the Top 10 Universities Offering Unmanned Aircraft Systems Degrees, according to Development Counselors International.

“Projects like this are important, and drones will be a big part in helping farmers of the future. It will help them grow crops more effectively,” said Texas A&M Corpus Christi Assistant Professor Jinha Jung. More farmers are beginning to use drones to tend their crops and are using the small flying machines to spray fields with pesticides. However, collecting data on soil composition and crop health is agricultural drones’ most promising function.

“The beauty of the whole thing is that it saves the farmer money and helps the environment too,” says Murilo Maeda, an assistant research scientist for the Texas A&M Agrilife Extension Center. “We are collecting information with the drones, and it is a lot easier than walking into the fields. We can cover 3 acres in 40 minutes with the drone. On foot it would take weeks to collect all the information.”

“Inter-Ed (Makati City) wants to help our international students bring cutting-edge technology back home to the Philippines, so we can begin solving global issues right here in our own backyard”, said Helen Bartholomew, the founder of International Education Specialists (Inter-Ed) the Philippines partner institution of Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. “There are many exciting opportunities currently available to international students interested in studying UAS technology.” With course openings in January and August at both undergraduate and graduate level, Texas A&M welcomes students from the Philippines through Inter-Ed who arrange admission, on-campus accommodation, student visa and travel in just 2 – 3 months.
