How did it feel to be offered a place at the Royal College of Music?

“The Royal College of Music (RCM) is the second-best conservatoire in the UK and Europe so when I received my placement there, it felt like all my hard work had paid off!

Taking the Music Foundation course at the Cambridge School of Visual & Performing Arts has been the first step in my career. Through the course, I gained my first experience in a professional environment within music and I know that with this solid foundation, I will keep moving towards my goal of becoming a professional musician.”

Would you recommend the course?

“I would definitely recommend the course! It can be challenging when studying abroad to learn new musical pieces, new musical styles and getting to grips with the audition process and style used in the UK. The Music Foundation course helps with all these tricky tasks. The teachers are always supportive and they help students who have a passion to study and enjoy music. In addition, learning about the UK education system, in such a supportive environment, really helps when applying for conservatoire and universities.

The school also tailored the course to my needs. They chose a flute tutor based on my desired area of focus. The teachers worked hard to make the Music Foundation the best course it could be for me. They set up a rehearsal schedule and helped me plan each session, helping me to learn something new, as well practice in the most efficient way. I am better at organising my practice schedule now because of their help.”

What skills did you learn on the course?

“In Korea, most of the vocabulary used in music is in Korean and American English. It was easy to get confused by the different musical vocabulary. The modules at CSVPA taught me the differences between American and British terminology. During the course, I had many performance experiences. I participated in many performances, getting to experience solo performance, chamber music and popular music. Through these concerts, I learnt 15 pieces that I can now confidently add to my repertoire, along with significant interpretive skills for performing.

My tutor also taught me how to half the time it takes for me to learn new pieces. This is an essential skill for studying at a conservatoire like the Royal College of Music, where there are so many tasks that must be accomplished in a short amount of time.

The most important skill I learnt on the course is confidence. Before joining the Cambridge School of Visual & Performing Arts, the competitive nature of the music industry knocked my confidence and I lost some of the passion I once had. Through the many performances I took part in along with the supportive teachers, the course helped me grow in confidence and reminded me of my passion for music and affirmed why I chose music as a career.”
